THEMED PRESENTATION
The Riderless Horse
- An Australian Impression of World War 1

Introduction

Chloë & Jason Roweth have been researching, arranging and performing Australian folk and traditional music together for over 12 years. This project, “The Riderless Horse” has drawn material from many diverse sources including field recordings from the National Library, sheet music, through exchanging songs and stories with other musicians, and so on.

The result is an oral or folk history; a unique opportunity to hear how people felt, what their direct experiences were, rather than just the dry historical facts. Everywhere the show is booked the performers are approached by people with their own stories to tell, or alternative versions to sing and the collection process continues.

When taken together the material is a revelation, but the individual elements themselves are also compelling, each in their own way. It's the details that are surprising and often thought provoking in each case. It is the character and spirit that shine through in these items, rather than heroics or bloodshed.

The Presentation

  • The music is presented simply and eloquently using voices, guitar and mandolin.
  • Items are linked chronologically with poems and quotes from the time, and some historical facts and figures for continuity.
  • Traces an emotional journey beginning with the nationalistic fervour at the outbreak of the war, and on through many stark realizations resulting in a more mature, confident and worldly outlook by the time peace is declared.
  • Balances serious and lighter/humorous items.
  • Shorter/longer sets can be arranged on request.
Please consider offering your audience a chance to experience this special one hour presentation, either on its own, or as part of a larger programme of music from Chloë and Jason Roweth. The show has proved successful on stages big and small - here is an indication...
